What is a Chiropractor?

Chiropractors are licensed physicians who attend 3-5 years of doctorate training following 4 years of prerequisite coursework, similar to pre-medicine. Graduates must then pass state boards exams and maintain continuing education for licensure. While graduates are qualified to be Primary Care Physicians, perform minor surgeries, and prescribe medications, state boards decide the facets within which they may practice. Most states permit chiropractors to order and interpret lab work and diagnostic tests such as Xray, CT scans, MRIs, and Ultrasound in the course of chiropractic care.

What is Chiropractic Manipulation?

Chiropractic care includes manipulation, passive movement applied to a joint, causing motion that corrects for restriction and/or malposition. A joint is an area where two or more bones come together, also known as articulation. Most often, the joint is lined with cartilage, providing a smooth and cushioned surface to protect the bones from rubbing together. Inside a joint is a synovial fluid that lubricates the cartilage, further providing a smooth surface and protection from friction, wear and tear. Joints have a sealed environment and are full of synovial fluid.

During the course of chiropractic care, when a chiropractic manipulation is performed, and a joint stretches, you may hear and feel a “pop” or “crack” sound which feels good. This is normal and called cavitation. Cavitation is the release of air bubbles from synovial fluid and a vacuum-like effect that allows a further range of motion. Over minutes to hours, the air bubbles diffuse back into the synovial fluid.

What Conditions Does Chiropractic Manipulation Help?

Chiropractic helps many musculoskeletal conditions, conditions involving joints, posture, nerves, cartilage, aches, and pains, muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Some of the more common conditions we help include:

  • Sciatica And Pinched Nerves
  • Herniated Discs
  • Back And Neck Pain
  • Headaches
  • Poor Posture
  • Arthritis
  • Stenosis
  • Knee Pain
  • Rotator Cuff Strain
  • Hip Pain

How does Chiropractic Manipulation Work?

Chiropractic manipulation works by releasing muscle and joint tightness, improving joint mobility, balancing joint motion and correcting for misaligned joints.   Polypeptides, enkephalins and endorphins, are released with cavitation and act as pain relievers and assist in immune system modulation.   For this reason, patients often experience immediate relief with manipulation.

If you have imbalanced posture, manipulation of your neck, upper back and shoulders may help restore posture by treating the imbalance from a varied approach.   Just stretching neck muscles has limited benefit, but with manipulation, your nervous system will reduce muscle tension and help better position your joints to reduce joint stress.   Muscles are often tight in RESPONSE to a restricted joint.
