If you’ve been suffering from headaches, you know how difficult it can be to go about your business with this crippling pain affecting your life. Most people resort to taking ibuprofen multiple times throughout the day in an attempt to dull the pain. But taking too much is bad for your health, it’s inconvenient, and it can also lead to a rebound headache caused by overuse of pain medication.

Fortunately, there are ways you can relieve your headache pain that don’t involve medication at all. Continue reading to learn about tricks to treating headaches without medication.

Drink Water

Headaches can be caused by dehydration. When you don’t drink the appropriate amount of water the brain needs each day, the result is reduced oxygen and blood flow to the brain. Drink cold water as soon as you feel pain in your head to normalize the flow of oxygen and blood. If you’ve consumed alcohol, coffee, or other sugary drinks that can dehydrate you, be sure to replenish your body with plenty of water.

Drink Tea

There are many different types of tea that people use frequently to treat headaches. Green tea, chamomile tea, ginger tea, and cinnamon tea are effective in soothing tension, relieving pain, and helping with relaxation. The caffeine in tea boosts energy while also containing pain-relieving properties that painkillers contain.

Hot or Cold Compress

A headache caused by tension or anxiety should be treated with a warm compress to relieve the pressure. A headache caused by expanding blood vessels should be treated with a cold compress to slow down the blood flow and reduce inflammation. Some patients find taking a hot or cold bath effective.

Exercise

If you’re dealing with a headache caused by stress or anxiety, working out can be a great treatment. Engage in a stress-relieving exercise such as swimming, biking, walking, or jogging. Aerobic exercise will minimize the severity of a headache.

Yoga is also a great exercise to practice if you’re experiencing headaches. By allowing your muscles to stretch out, it can help alleviate your pain. Practicing yoga regularly may also prevent headaches from occurring in the future.

Chiropractic Care

Visit your chiropractor when you’re experiencing headaches and he or she will perform spinal manipulation or chiropractic adjustments to your spine or neck to improve function and relieve the stress on your system.

Your chiropractor may also help relieve your headaches by helping to improve your posture through adjustments, various exercises, and relaxation techniques.
